![]() You can add multiple tags in one session. As you type, matching tags will be highlighted. You add tags by selecting existing tags and by creating new tags. In the inspector, make sure the Info pane is showing, and tap Tags. We’ll cover this in a future blog post.) Assigning Tags (Note: in the Pro edition of OmniFocus, you can use custom perspectives with tag-based rules to create new ways to organize and understand your data. To see items with a given tag, tap on that tag. You can add tags there - tap the new-tag button at the bottom-left. It appears along with Inbox, Projects, and other built-in perspectives. The Tags perspective has replaced Contexts in Home. Here are the basics for working with tags: Viewing Tags Tags are even more powerful and useful than contexts were. Then, when that task becomes available, you’ll know you need to wait till after that cup of coffee, and you’ll know not to talk to her right after pancake lunch. Which single context would you use? Well, with OmniFocus 3 you don’t have to figure it out - you could tag that task with all or any of “Work,” “Mary,” “High-Energy,” “Website,” and “Cat Photos.” An item could have just one context, while an item can have many tags.Ĭontexts were things like work, grocery store, email, or waiting - they said something important about how you could accomplish a task: where you needed to be, or in which app, or whether or not a task was blocked by somebody else.īut consider the case where you need to talk to Mary at work about how to post more cat photos to the website, but you want to talk to her only when you have high energy - because Mary knows everything and is very busy, and you have to be at the top of your game so you don’t waste her time. Expect it once the OmniGroup releases version 4 for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.Tags, new in OmniFocus 3, replace the contexts feature from earlier versions. It will be a new version and built from scratch with the new version 4. These changes to OmniFocus mean I’ll be making a new OmniFocus Field Guide. ![]() I’ve been running the version 3 public release alongside the version 4 beta with no troubles thus far. Don’t use it if you’re worried about data loss. The usual warnings go here about running beta software. At this point, the beta is only for iPad and iPhone, but I expect the Mac will be getting similar treatment in the future. Nevertheless, I’m excited to see the OmniFocus team willing to take risks to keep their software on the cutting edge. ![]() The beta is still early, and there are still features and even UI elements missing. The Omni Group is very much at the pointy end of the spear with this project. Also, this is the most complex app I’m aware of being developed in Swift UI. This new version is written entirely in Swift UI, which will give OmniFocus some real flexibility going forward. All of this while maintaining the full set of OmniFocus tools. There are new inspectors, easier navigation, and a much-improved outline view. This new version will give you much more control over the way the application looks and quality-of-life improvements across the board. I’ve been on the private beta, and I dig it. This new version will represent the most significant change in the OmniFocus user interface ever. ![]() Yesterday the OmniGroup announced the open beta of OmniFocus 4.0 for iPhone and iPad.
